Tamper-evident packaging is designed to leave visible evidence when the pack is opened or interfered with. “Tamper-proof” suggests that access can be prevented completely, which a shrink band alone cannot guarantee. A band should therefore be specified around the evidence it is intended to create, the opening method and the actual closure-and-container combination.

A shrink tamper band is specified to create a visible change when the intended opening route is used or the closure area is interfered with. It does not guarantee that access is impossible. Band height, retained geometry, perforation, sleeve material, shrink condition and the closure-and-container combination determine the evidence that the finished pack can provide.
Approval should define the unopened appearance, intended opening action, required tear or break pattern and the unacceptable conditions to reject. Retain correctly closed packs, cooled finished bands and controlled opened samples so marketing language, quality inspection and production acceptance all refer to the same demonstrated behaviour.

Buyer question
A correctly designed band can show that the area bridging the closure and container has been broken, torn, removed or materially disturbed. The evidence depends on coverage, film, shrink quality, perforation and how the pack is opened. A loose band that can be slipped off and replaced without visible damage does not provide the intended evidence.
The approved sample should demonstrate the expected opening trace to the buyer’s own packaging and quality team.
Buyer question
A tamper band may add resistance, but its primary role is normally to make access visible rather than to make access impossible. Closure security, child resistance, seal integrity and product protection are separate functions unless the complete pack has been specifically designed and validated to combine them. The machinery trial should not be presented as proof of a wider packaging claim.
Describe the band by its tested function, not by an absolute security claim.
Buyer question
The perforation should align with the intended opening action and remain in a controlled position after shrinking. It must survive normal production, distribution and handling yet open in the intended way when used. Test position, tear initiation, tear path and the visible result on cooled finished packs from start-up, normal running and restart conditions.

Verify the complete pack, not only the loose band. Define the closure state, band coverage, perforation, expected opening action, evidence after opening and unacceptable conditions such as slip-off or replacement. Check the applicable product and market requirements with the buyer’s packaging, quality and regulatory specialists because the machinery supplier cannot assign a universal compliance claim to every application.
