Design and verify the barcode in its final shrunk condition.

A barcode printed on flat sleeve film may change when the film follows a curved wall, shoulder, waist or base. The shrink process can alter bar width, module spacing, quiet zones, contrast and the angle presented to a scanner. For that reason, the flat artwork and unshrunk print are only intermediate checks.

Place the symbol in the most stable area available, build the required distortion compensation into the artwork, then verify samples produced with the intended container, sleeve material and tunnel process.

Verification, not guesswork

Agree the applicable GS1 and customer requirement.

GS1 guidance distinguishes simple decoding from verification of symbol quality. Linear and two-dimensional symbols use different verification methods, and the acceptance requirement can depend on the application. Use a suitable, calibrated verifier and the correct aperture, illumination and application standard rather than relying only on a phone or production scanner.

Artwork and tunnel interaction

Keep the symbol away from the most unstable shrink zone where possible.

Shoulders, recessed grips, sharp corners and rapid diameter transitions can demand high local shrink and create non-uniform distortion. Seam position, artwork rotation and the direction in which the symbol wraps around the pack also affect presentation to the verifier.

Change control

Recheck when the packaging system changes.

A material, ink, varnish, artwork, container or tunnel change can alter the final symbol even when the applicator model is unchanged. Define which changes require renewed verification and keep the result with the approved packaging specification.

Is a successful scan the same as barcode verification?

No. A scanner may decode a symbol under favourable conditions, while verification assesses print quality using the applicable method and a calibrated verifier. Agree the required standard and grade with the barcode owner or retailer.

Should the barcode be checked before or after shrinking?

Both checks can be useful, but the finished cooled pack is decisive because the tunnel can change bar width, spacing, contrast, curvature and quiet zones.

Where should a barcode be placed on a full-body sleeve?

Prefer a stable, low-distortion panel with sufficient flat or consistent viewing area. Avoid high-shrink shoulders, sharp transitions, seams and perforations unless the final pack has been proven by artwork simulation and physical trials.

Can one artwork file be used for different container shapes?

Not automatically. Each shape can produce a different distortion field and final barcode geometry. Confirm the approved artwork against every commercial format.

Who should set the barcode acceptance grade?
