Material control

Treat the reel as a controlled machine input.

A correct applicator setup cannot fully compensate for a reel that is the wrong revision, distorted, contaminated or conditioned outside the film converter’s requirements. Keep reel identity and condition linked to the trial and production record.

Storage instructions vary by material, print system and supplier. Use the converter’s current written limits rather than a generic temperature, humidity or shelf-life value copied from another film.

Reel condition

Do not tune the machine around damaged material.

Telescoping, crushed cores, edge damage, loose winding or contamination can change web tension and tracking. If a fault follows one reel but not an approved reference reel, contain the material and compare reel construction and condition before adjusting multiple machine parameters.

Record splice position and the machine response expected at a splice. A printed registration system may also need a defined response to missing or irregular marks around the join.

Static and cleanliness

Control the production environment as part of feeding.

Static, dust and loose film debris can affect sleeve opening, sensor performance and web handling. Use cleaning and static-control measures compatible with the material, machine and site risk assessment. Avoid applying unapproved products to film, rollers or sensors.

Reel-loading check

  • Correct material, artwork, perforation and unwind orientation
  • Reel core and edge free from relevant damage
  • Material conditioned and protective wrap removed at the correct time

  • First cuts and applied sleeves inspected before target-rate running

Traceability

Link reel performance to the finished pack.

Record which roll produced each trial or production sample. This makes it possible to distinguish an applicator trend from a material batch issue and supports meaningful discussion with the sleeve converter.

Why should shrink sleeve reels be acclimatised before use?

A reel moved between different storage and production conditions may develop condensation or behave differently during unwinding. Follow the sleeve converter’s written acclimatisation instructions before opening protective packaging.

Can reels be stacked on their sides?

Use the converter’s handling and stacking instructions. Unsupported stacking or pressure on the reel edge can deform the roll and later affect tracking, opening or cut repeat.

What information should stay with a part-used reel?

Keep the supplier, material, artwork revision, batch or roll number, lay-flat, repeat, seam, perforation, date opened and the format or trial in which it was used.

How should damaged reel edges be handled?

Quarantine and inspect the reel rather than loading it as normal. Edge damage can create tracking, tension and opening faults that are difficult to correct with machine settings.

Should storage limits be copied from another sleeve material?

No. Storage, shelf-life and conditioning requirements are material- and supplier-specific. Use the current converter documentation for the actual printed sleeve.
