What Does a Registration Mark Do on a Printed Shrink Sleeve?

A registration mark gives the sleeve applicator a repeatable optical reference on printed film. The sensor detects the mark and the control system uses that signal to position the cut relative to the artwork repeat. The mark does not by itself guarantee a correct sleeve: film tracking, sensor setup, cutter timing and the printed repeat must all remain controlled.

The sensor detects a defined mark on the moving web and the control system relates that signal to the cutter position. Correct registration also depends on mark contrast, print repeat, film tracking, sensor setup, feed repeatability and cutter timing. A readable mark cannot compensate for unstable film movement or an incorrect artwork-to-cut relationship.

The approval record should identify the artwork revision, mark colour and position, sensor arrangement, cut datum, winding direction and acceptable cut tolerance against critical print. Keep unshrunk cut samples and cooled finished packs so a later artwork, film or setup change can be checked against the same reference.

When is a registration mark needed?

A registration mark is used when the cut must align with printed artwork, a perforation or another feature whose position matters. Plain sleeves with no positional print requirement may use a controlled fixed length instead. The sleeve converter and machine supplier should agree mark location, repeat, reel direction and the area presented to the sensor before production artwork is approved.

The intended control method should be shown on the sleeve drawing or reel specification.

What makes a registration mark difficult for the sensor to read?

Low contrast, transparent film, reflective inks, variable background print, poor mark edge, contamination, web movement or an incorrect sensor type can make detection unstable. A mark that is visible to an operator may still be unsuitable for the installed sensor. The trial should use the real film, print finish and running tension rather than a paper artwork proof.

Record the sensor type and approved mark presentation with the format setup.

Buyer question

The sensor detects the mark, then the control system applies the configured offset and timing so the cutter acts at the required point in the repeat. The relationship depends on the machine’s feed path and the distance between detection and cutting. If the web slips, tracks sideways or changes tension, a correct electronic offset may still produce variable physical results.

What should be included in a printed-sleeve registration trial?

Use the production artwork revision or an agreed representative print. Test reel loading, mark acquisition, start-up, steady running, controlled stop, restart and any splice or reel-change condition that is in scope. Measure the cut against a named artwork feature, then confirm that the applied sleeve and cooled pack preserve the required position.

A retail barcode is a separate machine-readable symbol and should be verified on the finished pack in line with the relevant GS1 UK barcode guidance.
